There really was an "Annie" at one time, and she opened a used book store in the early 1970s. She specialized in Romance genre novels. The idea proved very successful, and Annie franchised the idea, leading to stores throughout New England and further afield. In 1989, Annie declared bankruptcy, and the store owners formed an association, "The Annie's Book Stop Association" , to purchase and protect the trademarks and names.
This store is characteristic of all Annie's Book Stops in having a strong collection of the various romance genre, including contemporary, historic, paranormal, romantic suspense & romance series. There is a strong collection of mystery novels, plus action, suspense, westerns and popular non-fiction. The majority of these books are in Mass Market Paperback format (sometimes call pocket books, though the present size would need very substantial pockets). A growing section features Trade Paperbacks. These are larger than Mass Market and usually are printed on better quality paper. They typically feature more "literary" titles than are usual in Mass Market books. (See New York Times definition here). Generally, books are less than five years old. An exception to this is our out-of-print mystery section. This store has a strong mystery section, and also hosts The Nobscot Mystery Book Club
New Books.
Although Annie's is typically a pre-read bookstore, we do offer a new book on request service. We can usually obtain recent titles within 48 hours. All New Hard Cover titles are offered at 20% discount from the publisher's recommended price. All new Paper Backs are offered at 10% discount.
Prices
All pre-read books are priced at half (50%) of the publisher's recommended price, printed on the cover. There is a minimum price of $1.50 per book
Trade/Swap - how it works
We accept recent paperbacks only, for trade. We offer store credit of 1/6 (sixth) of the publisher's recommended price as printed on the cover of the book. This credit may be used against the purchase of pre-read books only, from this store. The credit may not be used against other products, or at any other Annie's Book Stop. Credit may be used for up to a maximum of 50% (fifty percent) of the purchase price of the books bought. i.e. half cash, half credit. e.g. a customer brings in 10 books, all of which are acceptable, and represent a credit of, say, $13.50. Customer select three books to purchase with a total pre-read sale price of $11.97. Customer may use $5.99 of his/her credit against the purchase, therefore paying 1/4 (quarter) of the publisher's recommended sale price. the customer would retain a residual credit of $7.51 which could be used on a future occasion.
Books purchased from this store and marked with our stamp will always be accepted for credit, provided that they have not been chewed by your dog or drowned with your coffee. Any presented for credit without our stamp will be accepted if they are needed to enhance our stock and and have been gently used. With the exception of older and out-of-print paperback mysteries, we do not accept titles more than ca. five years old. Large format hard cover children's books are accepted.
